2016 F-Class Monthly Tournaments

Postby Askari » Fri Apr 29, 2016 10:04 am

Polk County Gun Club hosted its first 2016 monthly F-Class tournament on 23 April. A total of fourteen competitors participated in the tournament. The tournament consisted of three high-power matches fired at 300 yards (3/300 format). Each match consisted of twenty shots for score (with unlimited sighter shots). Shooting began at 0815 and the last shot downrange was fired at 1045. The weather was fair and warm with a light and variable breeze.

Scores were impressive for a local club like ours. The F-Open aggregate was won by Shelley Gudger with an incredible 598 (out of a possible 600) and 35 X's. (She also achieved the F-O single match high score of 200/10X.) Not far behind for second place was first-time F-Class shooter Ty Black with a 591/28X. Both Shelley and Ty were shooting 6 BR rifles. The F-Target Rifle aggregate was won by George Neale with a very respectable 590/16x. George also won the F-TR single match high score with a 198/5x. George was shooting a .223. Second place in F-TR went to Barry Postell with a 574/16X with a .308. Truly great shooting by all our winners! A listing of all scores is attached.

The F-Class tournaments are NRA-approved competitions with scores submitted to the NRA. Competitors are encouraged to shoot all three matches for an aggregate score, but are welcome to limit their participation to one or two (of the three) matches in the tournament. Polk County Gun Club has scheduled a tournament for each remaining month of the year through November, on the fourth Saturday of the month. The next tournament will be held on 28 May. Based on our experience in this match, we will begin our future tournaments at 9 a.m. and expect that the final match will end shortly before noon.

F-Class is one of the least stressful, most relaxed and most enjoyable of all shooting competitions: a match consists of twenty shots for record from the prone position with a very accurate rifle fired off a front and rear rest in a time period that puts almost no pressure on the shooter, with a group of friendly and helpful people. What could be more fun than that? If you haven't tried it, consider giving it a go!

PCGC conducted its second F-Class tournament of 2016 on 28 April. A total of ten competitors took part in the tournament. The weather was warm and sunny with light and variable breezes. The first shot downrange occurred at 0910 and the tournament ended at 1130.

This tournament followed the 3/300 format. In other words, it consisted of three matches, each fired at 300 yards. Each match featured twenty shots for score (with a possible match score of 200) and unlimited sighting shots fired in a bloc time of 25 minutes. Aggregate winners were Ty Black in the F-Open category with a score of 594/23X and Dan Henk in the F-Target Rifle category with a score of 591/26X. These two competitors also won the high individual match trophies. Close on their heels were second place winners Chuck Deweese in F-Open with an aggregate score of 589/24X and Shannon Robinson in F-Target Rifle with an aggregate score of 578/12X. Congratulations to all!

Attached is a listing of all tournament scores.

The next F-Class tournament is scheduled for 25 June. Please consider coming out to join us for this relaxed and enjoyable - but demanding - shooting event!

Polk County Gun Club conducted monthly F-Class tournaments on 25 June and 23 July. Weather was warm (ranging to hot) and sunny with light and variable winds both days. Fourteen competitors participated in the June tournament. Eleven competitors participated in the July tournament. The tournament featured a standard 3/300 format: three 20-round matches shot at 300 yards. Shooting began at 9 a.m. and ended at 11 a.m.

Shelley Gudger was the high F-Open aggregate winner in both tournaments, shooting impressive scores of 597/41X in the June tournament and 597/39X in the July tournament. Chuck Deweese shot the second highest F-Open aggregate score in June with a 579/17X and Ty Black took second place in July with a 588/29X. George Neale took first place in the F-Target Rifle category in June with an aggregate score of 582/16X and Wayne Cross took first place in July with an aggregate score of 588/21X. Second place for F-Target rifle in June was held by Shannon Robinson with an aggregate score of 567/8X, and second place in July was held by Shawn Risdon with an aggregate score of 577/15X. A listing of all scores is attached.

F-Class has now settled into a well-accepted monthly event at PCGC. Each tournament has drawn at least a couple of new shooters. Scores have been high for a small regional club - we have some very capable F-Class competitors! At the same time, matches have been fun and stress free. If you enjoy shooting rifles at long range, you should consider participating in this growing sport!

Aggregate winner in the F-Open category was Shelley Gudger with a score of 598/39X, followed by Jim Laietta with a score of 580/16X. Shelly Gudger also shot the high single match score in F-Open with a 200/10X.

Polk County Gun Club conducted its sixth monthly F-Class tournament on 24 September. Tournament weather started cool and sunny, warming into the mid 80s as the morning progressed, with light and variable breezes - about perfect for long-range shooting at first, with a good bit of mirage by the third match. Firing began at 0900 and was completed at about 1100. The tournament followed the 3/300 format - three matches of 20 rounds each, fired at a range of 300 yards. A total of thirteen competitors participated in the tournament.

Not surprisingly, the high F-Open aggregate was won by Shelley Gudger with an eye-popping score of 599/48X. (Needless to say, we all gave her a hard time about dropping that one point!) Second place aggregate winner in F-Open was Jim Laietta with a score of 565/9X. Shelley Gudger took the honours for high single match score with a 200/18X.

In the F-Target Rifle category, aggregate winner was Rusty Chasteen with a score of 576/15X. Second place went to Sam Summey with a score of 570/13X. High single match score went to Dan Henk with a 198/10X.

All of the match scores are attached to this message.

Each of the monthly F-Class matches to date has drawn at least several first-time competitors at PCGC, including some truly excellent shooters. We are delighted that they chose to come and shoot with us! F-Class scores have been very impressive for a small club like ours.

Polk County Gun Club conducted its seventh monthly tournament for 2016 on 22 October. A total of eighteen competitors participated in the tournament - a record for F-Class competition at PCGC, filling every available space on the firing line. As in all our F-Class events this year, the tournament followed the 3/300 format - three consecutive 20-shot matches at 300 yards. The first shot downrange occurred at 0905 and firing was completed at about 1115.

The weather conditions posed some challenges for competitors. The day was sunny with temperatures generally in the 60s, but there was considerable wind, variable but sometimes steady at 12-15 knots with occasional gusts above 20 knots. Wind direction also varied from NW to NE. Scores did reflect the challenging conditions, but were remarkably good in spite of the wind.

In the F-Open (F-O) category, the high aggregate score was achieved by Shelley Gudger with a 589/19X. In second place was Amy Courtney with a score of 564/7X. Shelley Gudger also took first place in high F-O single match score with a 198/12X.

In the F-Target Rifle (F-TR) category, the high aggregate score was achieved by Shawn Risdon with a 575/20X. In second place was Al Vincoli with a score of 572/16X. Shawn Risdon also took first place in high F-TR single match score with a 195/8X.

A listing of all tournament scores is attached.

The next F-Class tournament at PCGC is scheduled for 26 November. This will be the final F-Class event for 2016. After the November tournament, F-Class activity will take a break for the winter, resuming a monthly schedule again in April 2017, Lord willing.

Polk County Gun Club conducted its final F-Class tournament for 2016 on 26 November. The day was sunny and cool - temperatures in the 50s and 60s - with winds of about 5 knots gusting to 12 knots. A total of eleven shooters participated in the tournament. Scores were impacted by the wind, but participants nonetheless did some impressive shooting.

The high aggregate in F-Open was achieved by Shelley Gudger, with a score of 597/38x. In second place was Ken Vojta with a score of 566/11X. Shelley Gudger also took the honours for high F-Open single match score with a 200/15x.

The high aggregate in F-Target Rifle was achieved by Al Vincoli with a score of 564/6x. In second place was Tyler Vojta with a score of 558/7x. Shawn Risdon took the honours for high F-Target Rifle single match score with a 196/8x.

2016 was a good year for F-Class at Polk County Gun Club. The monthly tournaments were well attended, with participation ranging from eleven to eighteen shooters, including several shooters that made the trip from a considerable distance to shoot with us. Many of the participants received their NRA Midrange classification during the year. Competitors all pitched in on the tournament chores, paid close attention to the safety rules, and seemed to have a good time at the tournaments. As match director, it was a real pleasure to be part of this activity with such a great group of dedicated shooters.

F-Class monthly competitions at PCGC will resume in April 2017. By that time I anticipate we will have access to the new 300-yard firing line, with a total of 20 firing positions. I have every expectation that 2017 will be a great year for F-Class at PCGC. Come shoot with us!
